Best Running Trails in Baltimore

There is never a bad time to run in Baltimore.  The city offers beautiful running routes and walkways. From exhilarating stately neighborhoods to relaxing tree-lined parks, there are dozens of places you can test your endurance and workout a good sweat in your running shoes.

Whether you are a local or a visitor staying in the city in the short term, these running trails will offer a breathtaking challenge while allowing you to get in touch with the city and all its beauty. Without further ado, here are some of the best running trails in the city of Baltimore.

Lake Montebello – Herring Run Trail

Located just North of Downtown Baltimore, this inspiring 5 KM running trail is laced with trees and greenery on the sides.  It offers an excellent flat surface for people who want to up their speed and challenge their running times.

But in case you want to challenge yourself further, you can include the nearby Herring Park in your route and see the running distance increase up to 6.4 miles. The Lake Montebello – Herring Run trail is perfectly suited for people who love a cool and nature-inspired running environment. It will blow you away.

Druid Lake Park – Jones Falls Trail

This trail is located in Northern Baltimore City. It’s a full 4.25 miles long trail that extends from Penn Station to Clipper Mill. The trail is also fully paved. Runners get amazing scenic views of the downtown skyline.

Some parts of the route are also laced with trees and greenery, including a 1.5-mile loop around Druid Lake. The only downside is the fact that the trail gets very busy sometimes, but it’s fun to run on it.

Waterfront Promenade

The Waterfront Promenade runs from Canton to Federal Hills. The trail allows runners to fully appreciate the breathtaking views of Baltimore’s Inner Harbour and stately waterfront neighborhoods.

It is perfect for people who love to run close to the water as well. The trail is also relatively closer to downtown Baltimore so it may be a little convenient for visitors staying in the city or locals working or living nearby.

Patapsco Valley State Park

Patapsco Valley State Park is also one of the most popular places to run. It offers dozens of trails in one single location. You can start with the Avalon Loop Trail which measures up to 20 miles in length.

But don’t let the distance dampen your spirits. You will still enjoy the amazing views of the greenery and some breathtaking waterfalls as well. However, you can still get shorter trails within the park including the amazing Grist Mill Trail.

The Gunpowder Falls State Park

This amazing park also has several trails to choose from. Located in Northern Baltimore County, the longest trial hits nearly 20 miles, enough to test endurance all day.

Most running trails in the park are also flat and wide. Gunpowder Falls State Park is always busy though but you’d still enjoy a run there in the company of other locals or visitors.
